THE Department of Public Safetys
annual Aqua Smart Program, which teaches grade five students about boating
and water safety, has begun.
DPS, through its Boating Safety Section, is conducting daily lectures
on water and boating safety at all private and public schools in the CNMI.
On Monday, PO1 Joaquin Deleon Guerrero began providing safety tips to
students at Saipan Community School.
Last week, Deleon Guerrero was at San Antonio Elementary School.
DPS spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro said there are more schools lined up for the
program in April and May.
Ogumoro said students learn the 10 Aqua Smart lessons on day one.
On day two, students learn about personal floatation devices, visual distress
signals, water pollution and safety measures.
Students are given certificates upon completion of the program.
Ogumoro said the Aqua Smart Program has been in existence for more than
10 years and is conducted annually by the DPS Boating Safety Section.
Schools sign up with DPS for the implementation of this program which
is not mandatory, Ogumoro said.
