THE Guam Community
College Board of Trustees voted Monday night to appoint current GCC vice
president Mary Okada as president of the college.
Current GCC president Herominiano Delos Santos informed the board that
he is retiring.
According to Cathy Gogue, assistant director for GCC communications and
promotions, Okada is currently serving the college as the vice president
of finance and business since 2005. The transition will not be complete
until sometime in June, when Delos Santos retires.
Okada has a doctorate in Student in Education Leadership from the University
of Phoenix, a masters degree in Public Administration from the University
of Guam, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration in Accounting
and Management from UOG.
Before her stint at GCC, Okada was a comptroller for the Guam Public School
System for about 14 months in 2004 and 2005. At GPSS, she advised the
superintendent of education on all fiscal related matters for the agency.
She also managed an operating budget of over $200 million consisting of
local, special, non-appropriated, and federal funds.
Also, for two months in 2001, Okada was a controller for GCC where she
served as a member of the management team that directed the operation
of the college. She also administered the perpetration of the financial
statements for the college.
For close to six years, Okada was also the assistant to the vice president
of financial affairs of the college.
