UN under fire for Fiji probe

SUVA (Pacnews) — The United Nations has been criticized for sending a fact finding mission to Fiji to find the cause of last year’s military coup.
On Friday, U.N. Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, announced he was setting up a taskforce to report on the coup and how to help Fiji return to democracy.
The U.N. mission comes over five months after the coup, and after investigations by a Pacific Islands Forum Eminent Persons Group and the European Union, which have both made recommendations
The U.N. said it was not looking for a different outcome to reports and recommendations made by the Pacific Forum’s Eminent Persons Group or the European Union.
But professor in Pacific and Asian History at the Australian National University, Dr. Brij Lal, said the United Nations was just trying to regain some credibility.
“In terms of actually effecting change on the ground, in terms of becoming a player on the scene, I do not see U.N. report doing that,” he said.
