TONY Diaz outgunned Elias Saralu to lift NMC Proa to a 91-66 victory against Luta in the 2007 Inter-government Basketball League last Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
Diaz drilled 28 points to improve Proa’s record to 3-0 for a solo lead in Pool A.
Luta, which shared the Pool A lead with Proa before their game last Monday, drew 26 markers from Elias Saralu, but it absorbed its first loss in three matches.
Diaz’s guns were blazing early in the game hitting eight points in the first quarter, which ended with Proa leading by only a point, 17-16.
Saralu, who had only four points in the opening quarter, found his marks in the second period scoring Luta’s last 13 points to keep his team afloat at halftime, down by only four, 32-26.
The game was still close at the end of the third period, with Saralu and Diaz trading baskets.
The fourth quarter started with Proa up by only six, 58-52. But Luta lost steam in the payoff period, while Proa got contributions from every player it fielded in the game.
Saralu was held to three points, while the rest of his teammates combined for only 11 points. He finished with 26 markers.
Diaz nailed two triples in the fourth period and drew help from Joe Ito, Jerry Diaz, Stoney Villagomez, Mel Manibusan and Kevin Aldan.
Proa outgunned Luta from downtown with the former hitting 10 triples compared to the latter’s four.
In the first game, the Department of Public Works/Procurement & Supply held the DPS Enforcers to seven points in the second quarter en route to a 66-54 win.
DPW/P&S after losing its debut game against the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, won back-to-back games in Pool B, while the Enforcers are winless in three matches.
The game was still in a deadlock, 18-all, after the first quarter with John Steven Santos and Servando Regis keeping the Enforcers in the match.
But the Enforcers struggled in the second quarter scoring only seven points. They had only three fieldgoals in the second period, which ended with DPW/P&S leading by 12, 37-25.
DPW/P&S never looked back from thereon.
