GOVERNOR Benigno R. Fitial yesterday designated May as CNMI Tourism Month and swore in Debra Fleming of Tinian as a new board member of the Marianas Visitors Authority.
Fitial, in his proclamation, said the tourism industry has proven to be extremely important to the commonwealth, contributing to economic prosperity, employment, and international trade and understanding.
This year’s theme is “Tourism is Everybody’s Business.”
“Tourism benefits and substantially enhances the personal growth, education and the quality of life of our residents. It naturally balances the need to preserve a healthy environment with the need for economic development and promotes intercultural understanding, friendship, and appreciation of the people, geography and history of the Northern Marianas…and regardless of the course of human events, tourism remains a mainstay in the CNMI with its clean, pure, safe and fun lifestyle,” the governor said.
The new MVA board member, Fleming, said she will serve for two years on the board.
“With the challenges that we’re facing right now, I need to put in a lot of hard work and contribute my best effort in bringing development to our tourism industry,” Fleming said, adding that this is the first time she has been appointed to a government post.
Acting MVA Chairwoman Marian Aldan Pierce said they have prepared several activities and events throughout May which will include the 9th Annual Taste of the Marianas Food Festival and Beer Garden at American Memorial Park.
Other guests during the proclamation ceremony yesterday were Little Miss CNMI Opal Northen, Marianas Tourism Council representative and former MVA Managing Director Vicky I. Benavente, Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, Philippine Consul General Wilfredo Maximo, Palau Consul Eileen Kintol, Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio, other members of the MVA board and the agency’s employees.
