LOCAL business owner Lucy Montinola Alcorn was honored yesterday as part of the 2007 Small Business Week celebration held annually by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The ceremony was one of four held this week to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit and accomplishments of individuals and business owners across the country.
More than 100 small business owners were honored during the ceremony, which was attended by Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo, Alcorn’s husband David, and close friends and family.
Alcorn is the president and CEO of Global Food Services LLC, which supports the management and operations of the Navy Family and Bachelor Housing Program, Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs, and provides food services to the Department of Defense Education Activity School Lunch Program.
In March, Alcorn was named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2007 Small Business Person of the Year for Guam.
Alcorn’s company, although considered small business, last year bagged multi-million dollar service contracts from the Navy.
The GFS Group was awarded an estimated $7.3 million contract to provide various housing-related services for the Navy.
The contract calls for services ranging from finding housing for Navy personnel to the maintenance of various Navy housing units on island, including Big Navy and the NCTAMS area.
In addition, the GFS Group was awarded a $23.5 million contract to manage the Navy’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program.
The GFS Group became responsible for a variety of MWR activities, including the operation of day care centers, the gymnasium, and other morale and recreation activities.
The MWR contract was awarded to the GFS Group by the Navy Fleet and Industrial Supply Center out of Pearl Harbor.
Bordallo described Alcorn as a smart, effective businesswoman who continues to play a big role in rebuilding Guam’s economy.
“Her dedication to our island and her contributions to Guam’s business community serve as an inspiration to both women and business owners alike,” the congresswoman said in a statement.
According to SBA Guam branch office head Ken Lujan, Alcorn is representing Guam in the U.S. Small Business Administration’s observance of National Small Business Week in Washington, D.C.
Lujan said this event honors the nation’s most outstanding entrepreneurs, and culminates with the selection of the National Small Business Person of the Year for 2007 from among the 53 states’ small business winners, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
During SBA’s observance of National Small Business Week, more than 100 outstanding small business owners from around the country will be honored at award events that focus on the achievements of America’s top entrepreneurs.
The conference focuses on small business accomplishments, including disaster recovery, federal contract procurement and entrepreneurial success. Four major award events will take place, culminating with the announcement of the National Small Business Person of the Year.
Last year, Joseph “Joey” M. Crisostomo, president and owner of Cars Plus, was Guam’s ambassador to the National Small Business Week activities. He received federal recognition as Guam’s Small Business Person of the Year.
