Geckos shut out Eagles

By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

THE two teams in the middle of their respective divisions went head to head Monday both trying to make a push for the top spot in each division for IIAAG Girl’s Soccer.
The Taga division’s Harvest Christian Academy Eagles took on the Gadao division’s George Washington Geckos. With both teams hovering at five hundred on the season each team was looking to take the game to turn their season into a winning direction.
The game would be a tough one as expected and would be scoreless throughout much of the first half. However with time running down in the half Tanya Blas-Cruz would take a corner kick for the Geckos. As the ball soared to the middle of the field it would ricochet off an Eagle defender and past the goal keeper on an own goal to give the Geckos the 1-0 lead going into the half.
The second half would once again prove to be an evenly matched game with both teams never really getting a clear shot at the goal. However George Washington’s Amy Atkinson would sneak a goal by the defenders in the 68th minute to ice the game for the Geckos as they took the win 2-0.
In other games the Simon Sanchez Sharks would take on the Southern High Dolphins and prove that their 5-1 record was no fluke beating the 3-0-2 Dolphins 3-0.
The Sharks’ Jenna Pepito would score the first goal of the game in the 17th minute off an assist by Jhovilynn Gustilo. The Sharks would go into the half leading the Dolphins 1-0. The Sharks’ would come out strong in the second half scoring two more goals. The first would be on a corner kick from Ashley Besagar in which Christine Ubaldo would take the kick and score with it giving pushing the lead to 2-0.
