WITH both the
Guam Greyhounds and the Ace Hardware Aces coming off wins last week in
the Philippine Amateur Basketball League season opening games the stage
was set for these two great teams to go head to head Sunday at the St.
Johns Gym.
The game began like everyone expected with both teams exchanging baskets
one after another. At the end of the first quarter the game would seem
to predict a very good game to become with the Greyhounds leading the
Aces 21-20. Coming out of the second quarter the Aces would turn their
game up and would take a ten point lead with just over half of the quarter
done.
However the momentum would switch hands and the Greyhounds would go on
a 6-0 run forcing the Aces to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout
the Greyhounds would steal the ball and push the ball ahead to Mike Atoigue
who would get the lay-up plus the foul to complete the three point play
and bring the Greyhounds within one of the Aces with just under a minute
left in the half.
The Aces would settle into their half court offense and would get the
ball to Jun Navarro who would score his only two points of the game to
stop the Greyhounds run. With seconds ticking away in the first half the
Greyhounds Mike Atoigue would have to force a last second shot that
would fall just short giving the Aces the lead going into halftime 38-35.
The third quarter would mirror the first with both teams trading buckets
back and forth with the Aces keeping their three point lead throughout
much of the quarter.
