President Remengesau
on Wednesday declared April 22 as Earth Day.
Presidential Proclamation No. 07-80 said that activities are scheduled
on April 20 to 21 to celebrate the event and that the festivities will
be coordinated by the Earth Day Committee as chaired by the Palau Environmental
Quality Protection Board.
The proclamation said that April 22 is recognized throughout the world
as Earth Day to promote understanding the need to conserve the Earths
resources and planetary environment.
"The purpose of the Earth Day is to proclaim a day upon which we
will remind ourselves of the importance of protecting the Earth and conserving
our natural resources and natural beauty for the sake of our future health
and prosperity," proclamation said.
The proclamation said that all Palauans are encouraged to take personal
and community actions necessary to enhance and preserve our natural environment
and to participate in Earth Day activities.
The president again said that the island environment is very fragile and
the countrys future depends on its preservation.
