Garapan beach, water unsafe

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality advises the public that overflows from sewer manholes in Garapan have let to pollution in certain areas.
Residents should not fish or swim within 300 feet of the affected areas.
The manholes are located between the Horiguchi Building and the 13 Fishermen Memorial.
The overflow was caused by a piece of fabric stuck in the pump impeller, similar to the cause of another sewer overflow nearby.  The volume of raw sewage is estimated at 2,000 to 5,000 gallons.
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has repaired the pump and contracted a company to pump the raw sewage from nearby streets, gullies and drainages.
CUC and DEQ are concerned for the health and safety of the community and advise that no fishing or swimming activities be conducted in the contaminated waters.
