Public library hosts environmental expo

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality is inviting all interested public and private agencies to join the celebration of the 24th Annual Environmental Awareness at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library on May 1, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
Several agencies from the public and private sector will be demonstrating the many ways we can protect our environment and “let our islands shine.”
Students and interested individuals may stop by and check the presentations by Ace Hardware, Allied Pacific Environmental Consulting, Coastal Resources Management, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs-Historic Preservation Office, the Emergency Management Office, the Department of Public Safety’s Boating Safety and Fire Division, the Department of Public Works’ solid waste division, the Marianas Variety, Microl Corp. (Toyota), the Soil and Water Conservation District, and Marianas Resource and Development, No Ka Oi Termite and Pest Control, Hotel Nikko Saipan, and the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
This year’s theme is “Let Our Islands Shine.”  Community involvement, stewardship, and fun are integral elements of this momentous occasion.
DEQ is challenging all community members and agencies to show “Marianas Pride for Our Environment” by participating in the celebration.  Annual events slated for the environmental awareness month include Sustainable Living Festival, together with the Cook a Rainbow Challenge.  DEQ also conducted various competitions as part of the month-long awareness campaign.  They are recycling competition, lagoon cleanup, most beautiful village contest, and a poem and essay competition.
