U.S. NAVAL Hospital
Guam employees and patients, including those in the intensive care unit,
were evacuated early Friday morning when a retired military man who came
in as a walk-in patient threatened to shoot everyone and said he was carrying
weapons and explosives.
No firearms or bombs were found but the evacuation procedure disrupted
the naval hospitals operations for more than two hours and the terrorist
conduct of David Eugene Thomas, 49, put patients in danger, including
those in the neo-natal ward.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Friday, Thomas entered the naval hospital
through the doors reserved for ambulance and emergency personnel.
Hospital personnel asked Thomas if he needed medical assistance but he
stated that Andersen Air Force Base or the Guam Police Department should
be contacted as they know what they did.
According to Naval Criminal Investigative Service Special Agent Adam De
Ladurantey, Thomas began rambling incoherently and asked for a telephone
to call 911.
The 510 man picked up the phone and dialed 911. The U.S. Navy
Hospital personnel then contacted the Naval Security Forces Detachment.
Lt. Gregory Jones took the phone from Thomas and informed the operator
that the Naval Security Forces Detachment had been contacted.
Thomas then walked the halls of the Emergency Room area where Jones was
able to convince him to enter an examination room to obtain vital signs.
After vital signs were obtained, Thomas said he needed to use the restroom,
refused the use of a bed pan or urinal, and proceeded to walk to a mens
restroom down the hall from the examination room.
Jones and three other U.S. Navy Hospital personnel followed Thomas to
the restroom and found him sitting on a toilet bowl.
A Naval Security Forces Detachment officer removed his hat, prompting
Thomas to question if he was being physically challenged. Thomas proceeded
to wipe himself, and threw the toilet paper covered with feces at the
officer.
Thomas stated that he would grab the officers gun and shoot
everyone with it.
Naval Security Forces Detachment officers restrained Thomas and brought
him back to the examination room.
Security officers asked Thomas if they could search his backpack for anything
in it that might harm them. Thomas stated: I dont know. There
might be a knife, a 9 millimeter, an AK-47 or even a bomb in there.
As a result of Thomass comments, the U.S. Navy Hospital was evacuated,
including those in critical care, for approximately two hours.
A search of Thomass backpack found no weapons or explosives. His
U.S. military ID was found along with the U.S. Passport in his backpack.
