Boy in critical condition after nearly drowning

A SIX-YEAR-old boy remained in critical condition at the Guam Memorial Hospital yesterday afternoon after nearly drowning in the Garden Villa pool in Tumon a little before 3 p.m. on Saturday.
GMH nursing supervisor Josie Zamora told Variety that the hospital was asked by the boy’s family not to release “too many details to the media” with regard to their son’s treatment while he remains at the hospital.
However, sources said the boy is “local” and is in the hospital’s pediatric unit.
The Guam Fire Department’s Allied Life Support unit Engine 1 and Medic 1 responded to the scene, according to GFD spokesperson Phyllis Blas.
The Garden Villa is located across the street from the Fiesta Resort and, according to Variety sources, is a condominium complex.
So far in 2007, the island has had five reported drowning victims, two of whom died earlier this month, Variety files show.
On Monday last week, the U.S. Coast Guard pulled the body of the year’s fifth drowning victim, Auti Akineo Kasuta, 35, from the waters off of Tanguisson Beach.
Kasuta and four family members were reportedly in the water spearfishing when a large wave washed over the group. The other four members were able to make it back to shore, but Kasuta failed to do so.
