SMITH’S Sonic Booms strengthened their hold on the lead in the Spring 2007 NMIFA Women’s Recreational League after beating Fiesta Fuerza last Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Sonic Booms leaned on Ami Ridenou and Madison Smith’s second-half goals to nail a 2-1 victory.
It was the Sonic Booms’ second straight win after blanking the Grand Mean Striking Machines, 2-0, on April 14.
After three matches, the Sonic Booms now have seven points to lead the four-team field.
Fiesta, which was forced to draws in its first two games, scored the first goal of the match with Lindsay Davis scoring in the 11:35th minute in the second half after receiving a pass from Becca Rath.
After about six minutes, Ridenour put the Sonic Booms on the scoreboard nailing a goal in the 17:17th minute to tie the game.
Madison Smith delivered the winning goal for the Sonic Booms at the 34:15th mark.
Fiesta goal keeper Noi Horey was on guard in the entire first half shutting out the Sonic Booms, but failed to hold her ground in the second half allowing Ridenour and Smith to score.
The Sonic Booms used two goal keepers in the game. Maria Ornes took the goal- keeping job in the first half, before Toom Pannok replaced her in the second.
The Sonic Booms posted their second straight win despite playing without captain Emily Gries and defender Sue Knecht, who were on Guam with the two NMI teams in the youth soccer tournament at Harmon Field.
With Fiesta Fuerza losing, it remained in third place in the team standings with two points.
PIC’s Pretty Incredible Chicks, who before last Saturday’s game shared second place with Fiesta, grabbed the solo second spot gaining their fifth point after downing the Grand Mean Striking Machines, 3-1.
Sarah Helbert hit all of PIC’s three goals to lead her team to their first win. PIC drew Fiesta Fuerza and the Sonic Booms in their first two matches.
Helbert drew first blood in the 6:22nd minute in the first half after getting a pass from Divya Sharma. Helbert had back-to-back goals when she received a pass from Don Decha and hit another goal in the 23:47th minute.
Morgan Rose, who missed Grand’s second game due to an injury, announced her return with a goal at the 12:17th mark in the second half.
But that was Grand’s last hurrah, as Helbert kicked her third goal in the 20:25th minute in the second half to seal PIC’s win.
TeMart Gramlich and Decha were PIC’s goal keepers in the first and second halves, respectively. Becca Newman was Grand’s goal keeper for the entire game.
Grand remains at the bottom of the team standings with one point. Grand forced a draw with Fiesta in its debut game, but lost its games against the Sonic Booms and PIC.
