WITH Tuesday’s escape of four 16-year-old clients of the Department of Youth Affairs from a work detail at Price Elementary School, the Department of Corrections’ Special Operations Response Team, or SORT, will help train DYA officers on how to respond to such events.
It was the DOC SORT group that captured the four boys Tuesday afternoon near the George Washington High School campus in Mangilao.
DOC director Robert Camacho has offered his SORT officers to train youth correctional officers to avoid another incident like Tuesday’s from happening again.
“We are planning with DYA to hold an emergency drill that would contain many exercises dealing with escapes of detainees,” Camacho said.
Meanwhile, the four boys now face charges of escape, according to DYA director Chris Duenas.
“There is a formal internal investigation and we will not release any information on what took place until after the investigation.”
