The Bureau of Marine Resources
concludes its workshop on proposed fisheries legislation today at the
Palau International Coral Reef Center Conference Room.
The workshop is to come-up with a common goal for the development of marine
resources by combining all laws relating to fisheries in one Act.
The final day of discussion starts at 9 a.m. with presentations of findings,
options and strategies after two days of the three-day workshop.
After that, the participants from various state and national government
agencies, non-government organizations and other private entities will
finalize their recommendations to Congress.
The workshop is in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization.
Topics include an overview of project activities and outcomes and objectives
of the workshop, overview of draft legislation, technical report and considerations
for drafting, heads-up on policy and legislative significant/recent developments
relating to fisheries.
Also during the workshop Working Groups were created and assigned to present
structure, definitions and maritime zones; administration and management
and funds; fisheries management and related environment, biodiversity,
conservation requirements; requirements for fishing, aquaculture and miscellaneous
on aquarium fish and labeling cultured species; and monitoring control
and surveillance, enforcement and penalties and revenue regulations.
