REFALUWASCH Golf Association
president Jess Wabol said there will be minor changes when they tee off
in the Ryder Cup-like tournament against the Korean Golfers Association
on Feb. 9.
Wabol said they have changed the tee time to 6:30 a.m. for Fridays
opening round on the west course of LaoLao Bay Golf Resort.
The two-man best ball and two-man scramble will be played on the first
day of the tournament and Wabol said when they are done with the competitions
they will take a one-hour break and continue with the matches.
On Sat., Feb. 10, they will hold the match play format with the check
in time at 11:30 a.m. and the tee time at 12:39.
Wabol said they are hoping to hold this Ryder Cup-style tournament three
times a year.
In September last year, KGA and local golfers held a similar tournament
with the event ending in a deadlock.
KGA won on the first day of the tournament, which had a scramble format.
But the local golfers settled the score after dominating the match plays
on the second day.
Six groups each from RGA and KGA participated in the first round.
Joe Kamikaze Camacho and Charlie Jo gave the local bets their
first win in the scramble format thwarting Korean pro Kang Seung Woo and
Jung Jae Yeo, 1 up.
Wabol was alone in facing Bae Yong and Kim Kyo Nam, who won the Group
2 match, 9 up.
The local golfers cruised to their second win when Nick Sablan and Adam
Hardwicke beat Park Joung Hoon and Jeom Jae Ho, 1 up.
But KGA tied the count at 2-all when Jang Hyu Dok and Kim Jae Hang whipped
Tony Satur and Alex Aquiningoc, 2 up.
The Koreans swept the Group 5 and 6 matches to win the scramble format,
4-2.
Seo Keom and Lee Jae Sun downed former Superior Court presiding judge
Edward Manibusan and Rick Kautz, 2 up, while Lee Jong Jo and Kang Kim
Hyun downed Joji Taguchi and Gus Camacho, 1 up.
RGA recovered on the second day nailing six wins, two ties and four losses
in the match play.
Wabol, Hardwicke, Aquiningoc, Jo, Jeff Taylor and Gus Camacho posted separate
victories to force a deadlock at the end of the two-day tournament.
Wabol beat Bae, 2 and 1; Hardwicke downed Lee, 4 and 3; Gus Camacho whipped
Kang Ki Hyun, 3 and 2; Aquiningoc topped Jeon Jae Ho, 2 and 1, Jo defeated
Jung Jae Yeol, 5 and 4, and Taylor tripped Kim Kyo Nam, 9 and 8.
Sablan forced a tie with Jang Hyu Duk, while Taguchi also had a deadlock
with Lee Jong Ho.
Park, Kang, Kim and Seo Keon posted four wins for KGA.
Park won over Joe Camacho, 4 and 3; Kang thwarted Satur, 4 and 3; Kim
beat Manibusan, 4 and 3; and
Keon downed Kautz, 5 and 4.For more information, contact Wabol at 233-3673.
