Bicyclist victim of hit-and-run

By Trina A. San Agustin
Variety News Staff

THE Guam Police Department continues their search for the operator of a dark sport utility vehicle alleged to have struck and dragged a bicyclist at 5:30 a.m. yesterday on Marine Corps Drive in Asan. The operator of the SUV fled the scene.
A further description of the vehicle was not available as of press time.
The bicyclist’s name was not released but he remains in stable condition at the Naval Regional Medical Center at Naval Hospital, according to COMNAVMAR public affairs officer Lt. Donnell Evans.
GPD Highway Patrol Division investigator Danny Cepeda said the SUV was traveling south in Asan near the Harley Davidson store when it struck the bicyclist from behind.
The SUV dragged the bicyclist and the bicycle—lodged underneath the vehicle—for about half a mile at about 42 miles per hour. The bicyclist was able to free himself, but the driver of the SUV continued driving with the bike under his/her vehicle.
The driver then stopped at the Asan Park where he/she dislodged the bike and continued to drive. Witnesses at the park were not able to give a more detailed description of the driver or the vehicle.
GPD public affairs officer Allan Guzman urges the driver of the SUV to turn himself or herself in. As of press time, no one has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the incident.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the GPD Highway Patrol Division at 475-8465 or GPD directly at 472-8911. You may also leave an anonymous tip at Guam Crime Stoppers 477-HELP(4357).
