The gastroenteritis outbreak
appeared to have ended, according to the Community Advocacy Program.
Dr. Isebong Asang in an interview said that in the last two or three days
there have been no reported cases of the illness.
She said the latest count of gastroenteritis incidents reached 805 last
week but the figures have dropped in the past days because there were
no new cases reported.
Asang said the Bureau of Public Health will be making an announcement
about the issue this week.
The outbreak started in November and the Ministry of Health has declared
an outbreak and has cordoned off the Medical Ward at the Belau National
Hospital for the gastroenteritis patients.
Patients admitted to the hospital for gastroenteritis were not allowed
to accept visitors, another measure instituted to prevent the spread of
the illness.
The ministry has also launched a campaign against the illness.
The ministry has sent public announcements to all government agencies,
ministries, schools, both private and public including Head Start private
companies such as hotels, restaurants, business, food distributors, food
handlers reminding them to properly handle the preparation of food and
to wash hands thoroughly.
