Jury trial in double homicide set

THE jury trial of former Guam judiciary probation officer Raymond V. Tongson has been set for Aug. 8.
Tongson, the main suspect in a karaoke bar double homicide incident two years ago, was in the courtroom of Judge Elizabeth Barrett Anderson yesterday to set a date for the criminal trial.
The 76-year-old former court officer was removed from his job after he was identified as the gunman who shot Linh Phan, 39, of Barrigada, and Alfredo M. Garcia, 44, of Dededo at the Lylan Karaoke Lounge in Dededo in March 2005.
The motive of the killing was reportedly jealousy and witnesses told investigators that the suspect spoke to the victims before firing his handgun.
Phan, a mother of three and reportedly daughter of the owner of the karaoke bar, earlier complained about the suspect’s demanding attitude.
A co-worker said the female victim confided to her earlier that she hated serving the suspect who always insisted that she sit with him every time he came to the bar.
“It had been a month since the first time they met and since then, he always demanded that she sit and drink with him. He would get mad if she entertained other male customers,” a waitress of the bar said.
She said the suspect approached their table and shouted in Tagalog, “Is he the one you would rather be with?” before shooting Garcia at point blank range and continued firing his gun at Phan, who was running away.
“Linh immediately stood and tried to run but Ray was quick to aim the gun at her,” the witness added.
