Doctors group stays out of GBME row

THE Guam Medical Society is staying out of the controversy involving Gov. Felix P. Camacho’s revamp of the Guam Board of Medical Examiners.
“The Guam Medical Society has not expressed an opinion nor currently does it wish to express an opinion through its president, executive committee or general membership concerning the recent actions involving the removal and replacement of members of the GBME,” GMS said in a press statement.
“The Guam Medical Society recognizes that such decisions are governed by appropriate laws of the territory of Guam,” it added.
Former GBME chairman Dr. Jerone T. Landstrom, whose term is good until January 2008, questioned the legality of the governor’s decision to remove him and other members from the board. He cited legal opinions stating that board members are appointed for specific terms and may only be removed for reasons identified in the law.
Camacho appointed Dr. Ricardo Eusebio, now the board chairman, Dr. Patrick Santos and Dr. Ronald Kobayashi, to replace Landstrom, Patricia Taimanglo, Dr. Alex Chenet, Dr. Arthur Lorezel and Dr. Byung Soo Kim.
Sen. Frank Blas Jr., R-Barrigada, chairman of the health committee, on Monday asked the administration to resolve the GBME dilemma “lest it hinder the medical care for our people.”
