The Inter-Parliamentary
Union has extended invitation to the Olbiil Era Kelulau to attend a one-day
parliamentary event entitled "Addressing discrimination and violence
against the girl child: the role of parliaments."
Hosted by the IPU and the United Nations Division for the Advancement
of Women, the event is being convened on the occasion of the forthcoming
51st Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in March 2007.
The parliamentary is set on March 1 at the ECOSOC chamber of the UN Headquarters
in New York.
According to the invitation letter from IPU Secretary General Anders B.
Johnson, the IPU strongly encourages both male and female members to be
included in the delegation, including chairpersons or members of gender
equality committees.
Anders noted that not only would this ensure their attendance and contribution
to the parliamentary event, but it would also facilitate parliamentary
inclusion in the CSW discussions which will take place from Feb 26-March
9.
Anders said that the will place particular emphasis on the role of parliament
and the difference it can make in addressing and putting an end to violence
and discrimination against the girl child.
The event is also an opportunity to contribute to the debates at the CSW
which has as its main theme "The elimination of all forms of discrimination
and violence against girl child."
