‘Smash For Love" badminton tourney set Feb. 23-25

The "Smash for Love" badminton tournament is set on Feb. 23-25 at Palau National Gymnasium.
Games will be played from 5 p.m. onwards.
The Palau National Olympic Committee recently completed a court for badminton enthusiasts with the aim of introducing the sport for the Palauan kids.
This is a joint effort by PNOC Sports Development Officer Kazuki Topps Suguino, Chief of the Division of Park and Recreation Uchel Sechewas, The Philippine Embassy and The Filipino Community in Palau .
The "Smash for Love" tournament is a follow up of the recently successful Vice President Cup.
Categories to be contested include singles (Men and Ladies) Doubles (Men and Ladies) and Mixed Doubles.
However, those who joined the two tournaments, Ambassador Cup and Vice President Cup, will play on a higher level division since there will be beginners this time.
Kids 10 to 15 years old are also invited to join.
The first 30 players to register will receive Shimbros "Budwieser King of Beer" Smash for Love T-shirt, while the rest would get towels from Dolphin Pacific. Prizes at stake are giveaways from sponsors who committed to donate like Japan Embassy in Palau and the Palau National Communications Corporation through its General Manager Todd Houseman.
Organizer Allan Tuppil said they are setting up tournaments to encourage locals to play the game as well as foster camaraderie among all nationalities.
Tuppil said the organizers want Palau to be included in the roster of Oceania badminton events and are committed to train the young Palauns for future international events.
Badminton is a regular sport in the Olympic calendar with players from Indonesia emerging as the best in the world.
In the Pacific, only 11 nations regularly send representative for a badminton competition in the Oceania level, which include New Caledonia, Tahiti, Tuvalo, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Wallis Futuna.
Tuppil said like last year the proceeds will go to the Palau Red Cross Society. PRCS will set up a recruitment table for the blood donors and membership.
