A Micronesian first

MICRONESIA lost a pioneer scuba diving operator with the death on Jan. 30 of Ben Concepcion, who founded BC Dive Shop on Saipan in 1972. Ben died of a heart attack at age 57. His company is now known as Ben and Ki Water Sports in Garapan.
Adored by many dive tourists for his excellent service, gentle patience and infectious smile, Ben was Micronesia’s first Chamorro to be certified by YMCA as a scuba instructor in 1979. He took his instructor training in Hawaii.
Ben’s wife, Mariana Reyes Concepcion, better known as “Ki,” helped build the dive shop in Garapan concrete block by block. She would save up some money and every two weeks buy blocks to build the permanent facility.
Vicente Manglona Concepcion, a.k.a., “Benki” and “Chino,” had a heart as large as the ocean and a love for life’s simple treasures. He will be missed by his loving wife, his four children, his 12 grandchildren, his brother, sisters, family and friends.
Daily Mass of intention is being held at San Vicente Church on Saipan, at 7 p.m., with a Mass of a Christian Burial to be held Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Cathedral, with viewing preceding the Mass.
