Vice speaker to seek re-election

VICE Speaker Justo D. Quitugua, D-Saipan, yesterday said he will seek another term in November.
The other Democratic House member, Florencio Deleon Guerrero, also of Saipan, has yet to announce his plan.
“I vow to continue serving my constituents…I will turn in my letter of intent before the deadline on March 5,” Quitugua told Variety.
He said the Democratic Party aims to come up with a list of qualified candidates to serve the CNMI people.
“My letter of intent is just a formality. We need to submit a letter because that’s a requirement but in the past, they always gave priority to the incumbents… which means we were given the opportunity to run because we were the incumbents,” Quitugua said.
In an earlier interview, party chairman Gabriel Babauta said Sen. Luis P. Crisostimo, D-Saopan, submitted his letter of intent in December last year.
Babauta said the party’s executive central committee will meet at Aliviera’s in Garapan on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
“Everything has to go through the credentials committee and I know they have the review process and there are things they have set up already for everyone — one thing is for sure; everyone who submits a letter of intent will be called in for an interview and a question-answer kind of session.”
He added, “With the current economic situation, we want candidates who can put their thinking caps on and start offering new ideas on how we can help the economy and generate more revenues. We need those who have good plans for the CNMI — those who can come up with good, practical solutions even if they’re not popular.”
