The Turkey government
is seeking support from Palau in its candidacy to the United Nations Security
Council for the term 2009-2010.
Turkey Ambassador Aydin Sahinbas met President Remenegsau on Wednesday
to deliver the letter of Turkey President Ahmet Necdat Sezer asking for
support from Palau.
Sezer in his letter to President Remengesau said that Turkey is candidate
to one of the two non-permanent seats allocated to the Western European
and Other Groups in the UN Security Council for the term 2009-2010.
The elections for the seats will be held during the 63rd Session of the
UN General Assembly in 2008.
"Although a founding member of the United Nations, Turkey has not
been represented in the Security Council since 1961, when it served for
a split term with another country. If elected, Turkey will have the chance
to be represented in the Council after an interval of almost half a century,"
Sezer said.
The Turkey President stressed that his country has actively contributed
to the efforts to preserve peace and stability at the regional and global
levels and has supported the UN activities in social, economic and humanitarian
fields.
"With regard to peace and security, Turkey has provided troops, civilian
police officers and observers to international peacekeeping missions in
Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Middle
East.
Sezer said that Turkeys membership to the Security Council will
allow his country to contribute to international peace and security.
"I believe that the support of Palau to Turkeys candidature
will enhance the cooperation between our countries within the context
of international issues and institution and open new horizons for our
bilateral relations," Sezer said.
