PORT MORESBY(Pacnews) — Papua New Guinea Governor General Sir Paulias Matane says the number of new HIV-AIDS infection reported each year in PNG is already frightening.
Sir Paulias said Papua New Guinea has the highest reported rate of HIV-AIDS infection in the Oceania region.
He said as of March 2006 there were over 16,000 new confirmed cases of Papua New Guineans living with HIV-AIDS.
The governor general said it is estimated that there are now 100,000 people living with HIV-AIDS in PNG.
Sir Paulias said most of the victims are aged between 15 to 30 years and 90 percent of married women with the disease have been infected by their husbands.
