‘Christ image in God’s country’

By Gerardo R. Partido

A LOCAL photographer said he has discovered what may become a new tourist and local attraction for the island.
Alosius Panikulangara, a local businessman and photography enthusiast, said a rock formation he photographed near Talofofo Bay shows a side view profile of the face of Jesus Christ.
He said this image can be most clearly discerned if the sun is out and the rock formation is viewed at 5:30 p.m.
“I was so emotional when I saw this wonderful creation of Mother Nature. My sister and nephew were showing me the beauty of Guam. We were sitting at Talofofo beach when suddenly my eyes saw this amazing rock formation. I was jumping and showing my sister and nephew. They were all amazed! Talofofo is known as God’s country because of its natural beauty. It is true!” Panikulangara said.
Panikulangara was born in India, and moved to the United States in 1995. He graduated from the Western Michigan University with a degree in fine arts. He spent several years pursuing Indian classical music and later narrowed his interest to painting, photography, and sculpture.
Last year, Panikulangara visited Guam and decided to stay, attracted by the beauty of the island and the warmth of its people.
“As an artist, I was always thinking of doing something for Guam. Now, finally God gave me a chance to do that,” he said.
Panikulangara has taken many photos of the unique rock formation and plans to contact the Guam Visitors Bureau to raise the possibility of including the rock formation as an optional tour stop.
“This is very unique and I’m sure many tourists and locals would find it very interesting,” he said.
Panikulangara has also exhibited his artwork called “Together,” a painting that depicts the World Trade Center tragedy as a loss not just for the U.S. but for the whole world.
“The tragedy made a deep wound in every human being’s heart. Many countries lost their valuable people. Nobody could forget the pain this horrible act of violence has made. But we have to move forward for a better future. This is the main motive and theme of my painting,” Panikulangara said.
In the painting, various national flags representing the different nationalities of the victims combine together to make one flag—the United States flag.
Panikulangara has exhibited the painting in many art venues in the U.S. But he says he wants more people to see his painting because all people need to work together for a better world.
