Japanese gov’t offers scholarships for teachers, students of Japanese studies

THE Consulate-General of Japan at Hagatna, Guam announced yesterday that the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology Teacher-Training Students Scholarship for 2007 is being offered to qualified U.S. citizens born on or after April 2, 1972.
It also announced that the Japanese Studies Students Scholarship for 2007 is being offered to qualified U.S. citizens born between April 2, 1977 and April 1, 1989.
Teacher applicants who wish to conduct research on school education at Japanese universities are requested to apply.
Applicants must be a university or a teacher-training college graduate and have worked as a teacher of an elementary or secondary educational institution, or a teacher-training school for at least five years in total as of April 1, 2007. In-service professors and Japanese nationals are not eligible.
The scholarship program will include an allowance of ¥172,000 Japanese yen or approximately $1,400 per month to the successful candidates.
The maximum term of the scholarship is between October 2007 and March 2009. The scholarship also includes an economy class round-trip airfare to Japan.
The Consulate-General of Japan will select preliminary candidates from among applicants by means of a review of the submitted documents and an interview. A written examination in Japanese and English will also be administered to judge the level of language training for successful candidates that arrive in Japan.
Meanwhile, student applicants who wish to receive education at Japanese universities for enhancing their Japanese language ability and understanding of Japan and the Japanese culture are recommended to apply.
Applicants must be an undergraduate at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan. Applicants must have sufficient Japanese language ability to receive education in Japanese.
The scholarship program will include an allowance of ¥134,000 Japanese yen or approximately $1,100 per month (subject to change) to the successful candidates.
The term of the scholarship is one year from October 2007. The scholarship also includes an economy class round-trip airfare to Japan.

The applicants for these two scholarships are requested to follow the application procedures and submit the necessary documents to the Consulate-General of Japan by Wednesday, March 7, 2007.
