4 NMI students nominated to West Point

WASHINGTON Rep. Pete A. Tenorio announces the nomination of Gretchen A. Smith, Michael H. Kim, Jose T. Quan and Jerrie L. Vales to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, a media release from his office stated.
Gretchen is the daughter of Stephen B. and Magiel A. Smith of Dandan and is a student at Marianas High School.
Michael is attending Mount Carmel High School and is the son of Jae Hong and Young Mi Kim of China Town.
Jose, a student at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, is the son of the late Sidney Quan and Priscilla Tenorio of Dandan.
Jerrie is attending Marianas Baptist Academy and is the daughter of Roger A. and Celia L. Vales of China Town.
Admission to West Point is gained through a system of nomination, qualification, and selection.
A nomination is the legal authority for the Admissions Committee at West Point to offer a candidate admission after qualification.
Offers of admission are based on an evaluation of candidate academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, physical assessment, and medical qualification.
“Evaluating these young students’ application, performance, scholastic achievements, and leadership activities, is a source of great satisfaction,” Tenorio said. “It is an honor to have nominated these four candidates for appointment to the Military Academy at West Point.”
The Washington representative may have one constituent attending each academy at any one time.
Nominations are based on the students’ academic achievements, ACT/SAT scores, extracurricular and community activities, athletic abilities, leadership skills, and the desire to pursue a career in the U.S. military.
Nominations are presented to the academies, which make the decision on appointments.
Most offers are made by late April, at which time the Academy will issue the majority of appointments and notify nominees of their acceptance.
To apply for a nomination, a student should write a letter of intent to the office of the Washington representative expressing his or her desire to attend an academy.
Applications can be made beginning in the early spring of a student’s junior year.
The deadline for applying is Dec. 15 of their senior year. Letters and applications should be submitted to: The Honorable Pedro A. Tenorio, Resident Representative, 2121 R Street, NW, Washington, DC 20008 or to the District Office, P.O. Box 504959, Saipan, MP 96950.
