THE administration on Friday
released $6 million to the Guam Public School System to enable GPSS to
pay its employees.
According to the administration, the $6 million was enough to cover the
release of the public school systems gross payroll checks.
This is enough money for GPSS to pay its employees gross payroll
and to include all employee deductions for this pay period, the
governors office said in a statement.
Earlier, GPSS Superintendent Luis S.N. Reyes said the public school system
may not be able to meet the Feb. 9 payroll for its employees.
GPSS has been having problems meeting its full payroll for a number of
pay periods now, with GPSS employees only getting net pay and their deductions
such as insurance payments remaining unpaid.
Last week, Reyes warned that GPSS has to make good on its gross payroll
payments to avoid legal challenge.
With the release of the funds, the administration is now holding GPSS
management responsible for releasing the payroll checks to its employees.
The administration has met its obligations by releasing the funds
for GPSSs gross payroll. Now GPSS needs to release checks to its
teachers and staff, said George Bamba, the governors chief
of staff.
