A MAN was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend while she was breast-feeding their baby.
Dominic Helgen, 30, was brought to Superior Court for a bail hearing yesterday afternoon.
Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo imposed a cash bail of $10,000.
Helgen, who was arrested yesterday morning in Susupe, was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after the hearing.
His counsel asked the court for bail modification which will be heard today.
The affidavit of Detective Katherine M. Manglona stated that police received a report of an assault and battery at the residence of the victim in Chalan Kiya on Saturday morning.
Police Officer Johannes Taimanao Jr. was dispatched to investigate the incident.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was sleeping in bed with her one-year-old baby when the defendant came into the bedroom.
Helgen pinched the victim’s inner thigh. She was awakened and slapped the defendant. Helgen kept on touching her and stopped only when the victim told him to stop.
The victim had stood up and when she got back on the bed she began breastfeeding the baby.
When she made noise that annoyed Helgen, he turned to her, clamped both her legs with his legs and squeezed them causing her pain.
The victim yelled at the defendant and fought back by punching and pulling his hair. When the defendant stopped, the victim got up and sat her baby next to her.
The victim kicked the defendant to get him off the bed and told him to leave the house.
Helgen then got on top of her and punched her in the forehead twice and once in the eye. When he stopped she got up and took her baby and went outside to call for police assistance.
While the victim was waiting for the arrival of the police, Helgen pushed her while she was carrying the baby and punched her in the face. Helgen tried to punch the victim again but was stopped by his brother.
The police affidavit stated that Helgen had been arrested for beating up the same victim before.
Helgen was arrested twice in 2003, once in 2005 and 2006 for assaulting the victim.
The victim and Helgen have been living together since 1997, broke up in 2001 and reconciled in 2004. The couple has three children.
