Guam seeks to improve emergency readiness

TO BETTER prepare for both natural and man-made disasters, the government of Guam has increased efforts to prepare its agencies for emergencies.
A special national course that prepares participants to maintain critical government operations in the event of an emergency was held yesterday, attended by various government officials and emergency responders.
Lt. Gov. Michael W. Cruz, the interim Homeland Security advisor, opened the special course sponsored by the Guam Office of Homeland Security and spoke to participants about the importance of emergency readiness, especially on Guam.
“It is our duty as policymakers and emergency responders to ensure that we are prepared and ready to respond to any situation that may threaten the health and welfare of our people,” Cruz said.
He added that the safety and security of Guam residents rely heavily on the ability of public officials and emergency responders.
The special course, titled the Community Specific Integrated Emergency Management Course, is provided through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The four-day training course, being held at the Marriott hotel, encompasses lectures, activities, and real world emergency situations that will include response, planning, and policy-making activities.
According to Cruz, the training course will challenge the capabilities of local officials and emergency response personnel to incorporate new ideas, skills, and abilities into Guam’s preparedness plans.
The course also allows officials to identify additional demands and requirements that are specific to the community.
