AFTER the LG Twins concluded
their spring training yesterday, another professional baseball team from
Korea will be holding its spring training on Saipan for about a month.
According to Division of Sports and Recreation director Joe Lizama, the
SK Wyverns were scheduled to arrive early this morning and start their
training at the Francisco Tan Ko Palacios Ballfield in the
afternoon.
Jin Ah Corporation president Chung Jae Dong, who helped bring Korean baseball
teams to the island, said that 31 players, along with coaches and staff
will stay on Saipan from Feb. 14 to March 6.
The SK Wyverns are members of the Korea Baseball Organization joining
the club in 2000. It is based in Inchon and has yet to win a title in
the KBO.
This will be the second straight year that the Wyverns have held their
spring training on the NMI.
Last year, they arrived in the last week of January and stayed until Feb.
14.
While training at the Palacios Ballfield, they donated nets, homeplates
and bases.
Meanwhile, Lizama thanked the LG Twins for their contribution to the improvement
of the Palacios Ballfield.
The LG Twins are set to leave this afternoon after about a month of training.
They are also members of the KBO and are based in Seoul. The Twins, which
were formerly known as the MBC Blue Dragons until the LG Group bought
the team in 1989, won the national championship in 1990 and 1994.
According to Lizama, the LG Twins helped extend the bullpen of the Palacios
Ballfield. They also built a canopy at the Oleai Sports Complex, put a
roof on the baseball stands and built batting cages.
We really appreciate the efforts of LG Twins to improve our baseball
field, said Lizama, who said that the group promised to come back
next year.
They enjoyed their stay. They like the weather and the hospitality
of the people, he added.
