Tennis ‘Love” questions and answers

By Eli Buenaventura
For Variety

Since today is Valentine Day, maybe it is fitting and timely to give space to questions and answers about tennis “Love.” Here are 10 questions and answers to refresh your memory.
Q. What does “Love” in tennis mean?
A. It means nothing or zero point. It is derived from the French word “oeuf” which means egg, The oval shape of the egg is symbolic of the numeral “0.”
Q. When did the word “Love” become part of the method of scoring in tennis as it is today?
A. Since the 13th century. Any point scored is by 15, such as 15, 30 and 40. The score “forty” which comes after “thirty” is an actual abbreviation of “forty five”. If both players would have the same score of forty, the score is called deuce, which is derived from the French word “a deux”, indicating that two points must be won consecutively to win the game.
Q. Tennis players are easy objects of party jokes as poor lovers. True or False.
A. True. But it is not because they are bad lovers. It is simply because love in tennis means nothing. The more they “love” their opponents, the more the latter hates them. Tennis had come into being in the 13th-century France. And France is the most romantic country in the world so does its tennis players.
Q. Who is the tennis couple who is being offered $10 million to allow its first born to play in a tournament in 2017?

Q. When did Andy Roddick suffer his first love set loss as a professional?
