Guam’s disabled homeless to get new home

CONSTRUCTION has begun on the Caridad Mongmong Apartments, which will house Guam’s homeless residents with disabilities.
The Caridad Mongmong Apartment complex is a Catholic Social Services project funded through a $1,183,000 Home Investment Partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The new apartment complex is part of the Caridad support services program that is funded each year under the HUD’s Continuum of Care grant program that assists the homeless in moving into permanent facilities while promoting greater self-sufficiency.
First Lady Joann G. Camacho, who attended the groundbreaking for the complex, thanked Catholic Social Services and the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority for making the project possible for the community’s less fortunate.
“We all know that working together is an integral part of building a strong community that serves all of our citizens and I am proud to stand with the Catholic Social Services and GHURA to welcome the new Caridad Apartments. Soon, our less fortunate residents will have more resources that will assist them in living healthy and independent lives,” Camacho said.
The Caridad Mongmong Apartment complex will have a total of eight one-bedroom units with a community center that will have a laundry room, an exercise therapy room, an office space for case managers, and a kitchen and activity room. The Catholic Social Services has been working in conjunction with GHURA to ensure funding for the completion of this project. The complex is being constructed on J.A. Camacho St. in Mongmong.
