FIESTA Resort & Spa grabbed
the fourth and last semis slot in the 2006-2007 Inter-Hotel Basketball
League/HANMI Cup, while Nikko Hotel made a decent exit after their separate
victories.
Fiesta whipped Hafa Adai, 103-87, in the second game to improve its record
to 5-2.
The win moved Fiesta to the No. 4 spot in the team standings joining Aqua
Resort Club (7-0), Hyatt (6-2) and Pacific Islands Club (5-2) in the semifinals.
Only the final position of the top four teams will be contested with three
games remaining in the regular season.
Elmer Esdrelon and Adonis Macoto led Fiestas victory drilling 27
and 20 points, respectively.
Actually, Hafa Adai took early control of the game with Pete Iguel firing
10 points and giving his team a 23-19 lead.
Fiesta grabbed the lead in the second quarter, 49-36, with Macoto exploding
for 14 points in that period.
Iguel and Ronan Alcober tried to get the lead back in the third period,
as they combined for 23 of their teams 27 points in that canto.
But Elmer Esdrelon was there to keep Fiesta in the drivers seat
hitting 13 markers.
Fiesta entered the fourth period hanging on to a 71-63 advantage and never
looked back from thereon.
Esdrelon was later named PTI Best Player of the Game adding five rebounds,
four assists and three steals.
Iguel led all scorers with 43 points.
In the first game, Nikko ended the regular season with a 102-88 win over
Saipan Grand Hotel and finished with a 4-4 slate.
SGH dropped to a 3-5 record and joined Nikko, Hafa Adai (1-7), World Resort
(0-7) and Marianas Resort (2-4) in the showers.
Big man Ronald Delos Reyes was on target from outside nailing five triples
and scoring 39 points.
His 15-point production in the second quarter helped Nikko pull away from
a 21-all deadlock in the first quarter and take a 52-37 halftime lead.
Delos Reyes went on to score 18 more points in the second half and got
help from Roland Fernandez to foil SGHs comeback bid. Fernandez
drilled 18 of his 22 points in the second half.
William Opone led SGHs losing cause firing 42 points.
