BOE wants to have a seat on NMC board

TO ensure effective communication and collaboration with the community college, the Board of Education and the Public School System want to have a representative on Northern Marianas College’s board of regents.
BOE said it should be part of the college’s decision-making process.
Board of regents special assistant Mark Mendiola said they are now examining the existing statute that governs the NMC board.
He said under Public Law 4-34, the board is to have seven voting members appointed by the governor with the Senate’s consent — one from Tinian, one from Rota, one who is of Carolinian descent, at least one woman, one member from the private sector, and one member who will also sit on the Board of Education.
“There’s no specification that a BOE member shall serve on the board of regents,” Mendiola said.
Still, he added, “with the experienced people we have on the board, many of whom are from public schools, BOE should rest assure that PSS concerns will be heard and addressed by the regents.”
The current NMC board chairwoman is Rita H. Inos, a former education commissioner.
