A FIREFIGHTER of the Guam
Fire Department was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly assaulting
a police officer.
Guam Police Department public affairs officer Allan Guzman said Johnny
Reyes Newby, 47, of Talafofo, assaulted a police officer at Agueda Johnston
Middle School.
GFD spokesperson Phyllis Blas said the fire chief was aware of the assault.
The GFD internal affairs section will conduct a full investigation
of the incident, Blas said.
It is still unknown whether Newby will be placed on administrative leave
while the investigation is being conducted.
At around 9 a.m. Wednesday, Newby went to the school to pick up
a relative (a student attending the school) who was caught on campus with
drugs, Guzman told Variety.
When Newby arrived at the school, he became upset with school officials
about the situation.
He got unruly at faculty, started to yell, and made a scene when
officers responded to take care of the situation. He didnt want
to calm down, continued being unruly, and started to fight with officers.
A struggle ensued even after they told him to calm down, Guzman
added.
Newby was charged with obstruction, disorderly conduct, harassment, assault
on a police officer, and resisting arrest. He was booked and confined.
He was due for a magistrate hearing yesterday but as of press time, the
details of the hearing were not available.
Information on whether Newby was under the influence of alcohol was not
known to police as tests to determine such were not administered.
