Major customers can now use CUC power again

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

AFTER being told to generate their own power due to the shutdown of one of the biggest engines at power plant I last month, major companies can now reconnect with the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.
These customers use over one megawatt of power, and they include garment factories, ports, duty free shops and hotels.
Starting on Jan. 24, CUC required them to use their own power generation facilities daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., during the day, and from 6 to 10 in the evening.
CUC spokeswoman Pamela Mathis said an “unfortunate and serious vibration/foundation problem” required them to shut down one of the generators at Power Plant I.
But Mathis said a temporary replacement for the broken engine has already been repaired and tested, and these customers can now use CUC power again.
