Supreme Court Chief Justice
Arthur Ngiraklsong yesterday set the date for the Ngatpang State Election
on March 29.
The election is to choose nine at large members of the Ngatpang State
Legislature and the Governor, a result of the recent referendum.
In that referendum, the people of Ngatpang voted to prefer choosing the
state officials through election, especially the Governor, instead of
by traditional way.
Before, the state constitution automatically gives the position of Acting
Governor for the Chief Rekemesik, who happens to be Shalluym Etpison.
Etpison held the post since March 2003.
Following the recent election, Shallum automatically stepped down from
office as acting governor and held the title Chief Rekemesik on an acting
capacity.
Also shortly after the referendum, Chief Rebelkuul Felix Osilek is automatically
the head of State according to Art. 5 Sec. 2 of the State Constitution.
The members of the State Legislature will have a term of four years, at
least 25 years of age, able to read and write in Palauan language and
shall not hold any chief title of Ngatpang State among other qualifications.
The Governor will also have four year terms of not more than two consecutive
terms, at least 35 years of age, resided in Ngatpang for at least one
year before the election and other such qualifications.
He is not also employed by the national government or by a private company
or a corporation.
