Bill to name Garapan road after ex-lawmaker

By Gemma Q. Casas
Variety News Staff

FORMER Vice Speaker Jesus T. Attao, who retired from government service last year, will soon have his name “immortalized” if a bill naming a road after him becomes law.
House Local Bill 15-4, introduced by House Minority Leader Rep. Arnold I. Palacios, R-Saipan, Reps. Ramon A. Tebuteb, R-Saipan, Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero, R-Saipan, and Benjamin B. Seman, R-Saipan, now awaits Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s signature.
The last day for action on H.L.B. 15-4 is Feb. 26, based on records from the Office of the Governor’s Programs and Legislative Review Office.
The four lawmakers are proposing that the stretch of road from Beach Road to Sugar King Road known as Garapan Street be renamed Jesus T. Attao Road in honor of the former Republican lawmaker’s contributions to the community.
Attao, who is also a former House floor leader, represented Precinct 3 in the House of Representatives for eight consecutive terms or from 1990 to 2006.
He served a total of 35 years in government in various capacities.
“The Third Senatorial District delegation finds the Honorable Jesus T. Attao to have been instrumental in the establishment of commonwealth-wide and local laws…. (He) has unquestionably proven time and again that the interests and welfare of the people come first,” according to H.L.B. 15-4.
It added, “(Attao) is a valued member of the community who will continue to offer his wisdom to future generations of leaders…and it is the intent of the Third Senatorial District Delegation to honor this humble statesman by naming a stretch of road after him in the precinct that he has served so competently and so affectionately for the past 16 years.”
