PCC Mesekiu sweeps first round of PML

Hardworking Palau Community College Mesekiu baseball team swept its fist round assignments by beating Ngerbeched, 10-5, on Monday Feb. 12 in the 2007 Palau Major League at the Asahi Field.
The win was Mesekiu’s seventh straight in as many outings while dealing Ngerbeched its second defeat of the season.
PCC won over Ngardmau, 9-3; Koror, 24-3, Ngerbeches 27-7, Airai, 4-2; Red Torch, 20-10; Kayangel 9-4; and Ngerbeched 10-5.
The current team standings are PCC Mesekiu (7-0), Airai (6-1), Ngerbeched (5-2), Kayangel (4-3), Ngardmau (3-4), Ngerbeches (2-5), Koror (1-6), and Ngaraard (0-7).
Mesekiu thus remained the only undefeated team so far after that masterful win against Ngerbeched.
In that game, Ngerbeched scored early in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Kalei Lui, who stole second base and scored on a rare error by the PCC first baseman. Showing its composure, PCC quickly took the lead at the top of the second inning with four runs on four consecutive singles by Melengis Uchel, Cleofas Iyar, Sureor Ngirailemesang and Spis Gordon and a double by Bedor Kyota.
In the third inning, PCC scored two more runs, for a 6-1 lead when Omsuul Yalap and Dekei Ngiramengior both singled and Ngerbeched shortstop misplayed a hard grounder by Melengis and Sureor singled.
Ngerbeched scored two runs to cut the deficit, 3-6 and another run to move closer 4-6.
But PCC struck again in the fifth for two more runs on a triple by Caleb Meltel and a single by Melengis.
Ace pitcher Drake Yosiwo of Ngerbeched and Sureor kept both team scoreless until the eight inning.
At the top of the eight, PCC scored two runs on three doubles by Bedor, Dekei and Caleb Meltel, increasing the lead to 10 to 4. In the bottom of the ninth and final inning, Ngerbeched scored one for a final score of 10-5.
Kaleb Dulei pitched three innings, allowing three singles. Sureor pitched six innings, striking out 7.
