LUCY M. Alcorn, the president
and chief executive officer of GFS Group, has been recognized as the Small
Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The awarding ceremony, which was attended by Gov. Felix P. Camacho and
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo, was held at the University of Guam
Jesus and Eugenia Leon Guerrero Building of Business and Public Administration
Multipurpose room.
Alcorn will now compete with other winners nationwide this April in Washington,
D.C.
Alcorns company, although considered small business, last year bagged
multi-million dollar service contracts from the Navy.
GFS Group was awarded an estimated $7.3 million contract to provide various
housing-related services for the Navy.
The contract calls for services ranging from finding housing for Navy
personnel to the maintenance of various Navy housing units on island,
including Big Navy and the NCTAMS area.
In addition, GFS Group was awarded a $23.5 million contract to manage
the Navys Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Program.
GFS Group became responsible for a variety of MWR activities, including
the operation of day care centers, the gymnasium, and other morale and
recreation activities.
The MWR contract was awarded to GFS Group by the Navy Fleet and Industrial
Supply Center out of Pearl Harbor.
According to Alcorn, the companys employees are extremely
pleased and proud to be awarded the contracts.
Aside from the Navys housing and MWR contracts, GFS Group also handled
the Department of Defenses school lunch program.
