LUCY M. Alcorn, the president and chief executive officer of GFS Group, has been recognized as the Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The awarding ceremony, which was attended by Gov. Felix P. Camacho and Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo, was held at the University of Guam Jesus and Eugenia Leon Guerrero Building of Business and Public Administration Multipurpose room.
Alcorn will now compete with other winners nationwide this April in Washington, D.C.
Alcorn’s company, although considered small business, last year bagged multi-million dollar service contracts from the Navy.
GFS Group was awarded an estimated $7.3 million contract to provide various housing-related services for the Navy.
The contract calls for services ranging from finding housing for Navy personnel to the maintenance of various Navy housing units on island, including Big Navy and the NCTAMS area.
In addition, GFS Group was awarded a $23.5 million contract to manage the Navy’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Program.
GFS Group became responsible for a variety of MWR activities, including the operation of day care centers, the gymnasium, and other morale and recreation activities.
The MWR contract was awarded to GFS Group by the Navy Fleet and Industrial Supply Center out of Pearl Harbor.
According to Alcorn, the company’s employees are “extremely pleased and proud” to be awarded the contracts.
Aside from the Navy’s housing and MWR contracts, GFS Group also handled the Department of Defense’s school lunch program.
