France earmarks $50M for Wallis and Futuna

MATA’UTU (Pacnews) — French aid for Wallis and Futuna has been earmarked at close to $50 million for the 2007-2011 period.
The financial package called “development contract” was scheduled to be signed in Paris in the next few days, between French minister for overseas, François Baroin, and the Pacific territory’s political authorities, French High Commission officials said.
The new package will be the largest ever and focuses on infrastructural projects that had been long overdue.
These include the upgrading of Futuna’s airport and airstrip about $8.5 million and the construction of a multi-purpose sports hall on Wallis.
