GOP still has no platform, candidates

By Emmanuel T. Erediano

WITH barely eight months before midterm elections, the Republican Party still has no platform — or even candidates.
The party’s central committee also has no list of the GOP’s membership.
Variety learned that the central committee has yet to appoint members to the platform and campaign committees.
But before those committees are set up, a slate for candidates should be completed first.
All 18 House seats and three Senate seats are at stake in November.
According to the party bylaws, Section 16, Article 1, “a standing party platform committee shall be appointed by the president of the commonwealth central committee promptly after his election to propose revisions to the party platform. It shall report its activities quarterly to the commonwealth central committee and shall prepare a draft of the party platform.”
The structure and functions of the campaign and the candidate committees “shall be determined by the commonwealth central committee.”
According to GOP spokesman, Kim M. Rosario, the central committee is moving forward.
He said they are now receiving nominations from precinct leaders who will elect the officers of precinct clubs which will work with the central committee in selecting candidates.
