THE jury trial in the civil
lawsuit filed by a former teacher against the Public School System and
a former principal continues today.
Designated federal court Presiding Judge Terry J. Hatter excused the eight
jurors before noon on Friday and ordered them to return to court today.
The attorneys of plaintiff Lisa Black, Michael Dotts and George Hasselback,
rested their case on Thursday after the testimony of their last witness
Karen Borja, the principal of Marianas High School.
Black, who sued PSS and Hopwood Jr. High Schools former principal
Jim Brewer for wrongful termination, took the witness stand again on Friday
for rebuttal examination.
The defense represented by Deputy Assistant General Gregory Baka and Heather
Kennedy presented their witnesses on Thursday, and these included Hopwoods
former vice principal, Elizabeth Nepaial.
One of the defense witnesses, Katherine Borja, said that she and Black
had some disagreements.
She added that there were also a lot of complaints from the students about
Black.
She said she advised the students to submit their letter of complaint
to Brewer, the acting principal at that time but the students chose to
bring their complaints to her.
She said Black later sent her an insulting letter, adding
that she was relieved when the plaintiff left the school.
Black sued for wrongful discharge and violation of public policy, violation
of civil rights, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent
infliction of emotional distress and breach of contract.
