Anatahan volcanic haze over Saipan, Tinian, again

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

FOR the second time this month, the volcano on Anatahan has emitted gas and steam plumes which brought haze to the skies of Saipan and Tinian yesterday.
The haze was expected to move out of the area late in the evening although neither the U.S. Geological Service nor the National Weather Service could detect the haze on radar or satellite, according to an advisory from the Emergency Management Offic.
Based on local detection of a sulfurous odor and visibility of six miles or less, EMO said low-level winds “have carried the volcanic haze southward” to Saipan and Tinian.
According to the EMO advisory, the concentration of volcanic gases should be low but the haze and odor may affect people with respiratory problems.
EMO said the haze will not affect most residents but some people with chronic respiratory problems may experience some symptoms and should remain indoors until the air and sulfur odor moves out of our area. Mariners are also advised to avoid the Anatahan area.
