ST. Augustine’s Itungebai Bells outwitted St. Francis’s Ervin Sinaich in the championship bout of the first Mindszenty Maru Wrestling Tournament last Friday at the Mindszenty Gym.
The tournament ran from Feb. 5-16 as a pilot project for Physical Education at the school.
Bells won $5 while Sinaich went home with $3.
Ului Remengesau settled for third place and won $2 after beating Ngirameketii Ngirkelau.
The other competitors were Isao Misech, Tutii Tommy Jr. Keteluang Akitaya and Masen Imetengel.
All the young wrestlers got their certificates.
PE teacher Jemmy Watanabe said that the goal of the tournament is for the kids to learn the basics of the game and eventually pursue into the sport of wrestling.
Maru wrestling , he said, is similar to Japan’s most popular combat sport of sumo.
