A FEW weeks ago, the local
media noted the Chamorro Nations decision to go global in its quest
to stop the movement of troops from Okinawa, to put on hold any further
military activities and buildup in the Pacific, and the like. To that
end, they posted on the Internet a heart-rending petition pleading for
the UN to step in and put the United States of America in its place, so
to speak.
Occasional peeks at the petition and signatures showed that things had
pretty much stalled out after the first few days, and the author has now
closed the petition to further signatures perhaps in the realization
that (1) most of those who signed up were local activists and/or whacked-out
liberals worldwide whod happily sign anything critical of the U.S.
and (2) as noted above, nothing much was happening with the petition.
It never really took off, ranking far below such hot-button issues as
an airline passengers Bill of Rights, opposition to the phase-out
of the WalMart bulk textile department, and a plea to keep Dunkin
Donuts kosher.
All in all, it seems to have enjoyed about the same level of support as
the 10-year-long drive to get all Native Inhabitants of Guam
enrolled for the political status plebiscite.
The Decolonization Commission now has yet another new director in James
Underwood. Maybe he should contrive to post the Guam Decolonization
Registry on-line as well, along with a full revelation of its racially
discriminatory intent. You never can tell who might subscribe.
